A very long while ago, about 300 million years ago when Pangea broke apart and began to the separate, lands began to collide and fold. These lands formed fold mountains. This is basically how the Appalachian Mountains were created. The Atlantic Maritime is part of the Appalachian Mountains region. The highest point in the Atlantic Maritime is Mount Carelton which is 807 meters in height and is in New Brunswick.
The Atlantic Maritime ecozone contains layers of sedimentary rocks similar to the one which can be found in Scotland from when they were once together in Europe. Sedimentary rock is formed by sediments that are deposited over time. There is also volcanic activity in the Atlantic Maritime ecozone which results for there to also be igneous rock. Igneous rock is formed when magma cools and becomes a solid on the Earths surface.
